“The moment has come… Open your minds and I will share with you… The future” – Gellert Grindelwald
One year ago at this time we we’re still shocked with Johnny’s surprise appearance fully dressed as Gellert Grindelwald at 2018 San Diego Comic Con.
It all started when the main actors from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogel, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoe Kravitz, Claudia Kim, Callum Turner, and Jude Law) were almost finishing their panel for a huge audience talking about the upcoming movie, when suddenly everything became dark, and Grindelwald’s symbol appeared on the big screen along with his voice that filled the room with an alternated speech from the movie:
“Friends? You come today because you crave something new… Something different”.
Then, an alternate line not released in the movie and probably from one of Johnny’s rehearsals continues:
“The moment has come. Open your minds and I will share with you… The future”
The screen then changed for an alternate image from the amphitheater where some of the Grindelwald’s followers made all the people who received special bracelets shine in a blue light. The same had happened on the beginning of the interview when Eddie Redmayne waved Newt wand and made the bracelets light up.
But no one was ready for what was going to happen…
At the same time, out of nowhere Johnny fully dressed from head to toe as Gellert Grindelwald appeared on the stage and all you can hear is the crowd going crazy – I gotta say. THIS moment was something really unique beyond fantastic. I don’t know how Johnny can kept the character, but he did and shared with the surprised audience an alternate speech from what we would hear and watch more than 3 months later when the movie was finally released.
What also called attention was the atmosphere. Just like Grindelwald, Johnny made all the crowd stay quiet (something that even made Jude Law surprised) as he started to talk:
“My brothers, my sisters, my friends…
The great gift of your applause, is not for me, but for yourselves… Therefore, applaud yourselves…
It has been said that I hate the non-magic, the Muggles, the No-Maj, the Can’t-Spells. I do not hate them… I do not. I say the Muggles are not lesser, but other. Not worthless, but of other value. Magic… blooms only in rare souls…. It is granted to those who live for higher things. Oh, what a world we would make for all of humanity. All the humanity, we who live for freedom, for truth, the moment has come to rise up and take our rightful place in the world.”
And as soon as he appeared, he vanished away living a shocked and thrilled crowd who really enjoyed his performance and was more than hyped for the movie, because a new trailer was also released few hours earlier.
Although, many people was hoping for him to give an interview it didn’t happened until months later, what in my opinion was something I really enjoyed and maybe something that Johnny was also wanting to give to the audience keeping his character a mysterious person.
Later on the same day at the Comic-Con, the cast reunited to give an interview for Entertainment Tonight and revealed that the cast knew about Johnny’s surprise but not about Johnny being Grindelwald on the first movie.
This was a day to remember.
